Black History Month
We are celebrating Black History Month by honoring the Black community's many varied, and understated, contributions to gardening. We're doing this by deepening our commitment to the Black gardening community through donations and volunteer hours; and raising awareness for non-profits who are teaching future generations about the connection between nature and culture.
These organizations include:
Black Lives Veggies, Austin, TX
Founded in the summer of 2020 by Larry Franklin Black Lives Veggies strives to educate and empower members from disenfranchised communities to grow their own healthy organic food. Based on Franklin's belief that lack of access to healthy, fresh food is one of the root causes of "the problems in our communities" as he puts it, the non-profit is on a mission to change that. From advising new gardeners to expanding community gardens and working to eliminate the food deserts in underserved communities, Black Lives Veggies is catalyzing a powerful and empowering movement.

National Black Farmers Association (NBFA), Baskerville, VA
Representing African-American farmers and their families in the United States, the NBFA serves tens of thousands of members nationwide through education and advocacy efforts focused on civil rights, land retention, access to public and private loans, education and agricultural training, and rural economic development for Black and other small farmers.
Black farmers nationwide have historically experienced discrimination in their dealings with U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies. Denied access to government loans and subsidies, emergency and disaster assistance, as well as other aid, Black farmers have lost their farms and their homes.
Our donation supports the NBFA's work to make sure Black farmers no longer suffer race-based exclusion from the massive federal agricultural subsidy system.
Visit the NBFA website to find out more about their current projects.
